(Pamplona, 14th January 2013) -Vienna will host the EWEA 2013. The event will be held at The Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center from 4th to 7th February this year. EWEA (Europe’s premier Wind Energy Event) has selected IINdeModular to be presented at the Conference. The “Development and validation of an innovative joint system for sectional blades” conference will be held on Monday 4th February at 14 hours. The process to develop and validate a joint system for a 61.5m blade (5MW wind turbine) will be presented in the conference.
INdeModularTM joint system is a bolted connection located in the blade spar cap where the main blade loads are transmitted. It is particularly profitable for longer blades (ranging from 50 to 100 meters). INdeModular is innovative because its geometry accommodates a high number of bolts, which results in higher supported and transmitted load per spar cap length than other solutions. Its modular concept, composed of cell units, can be easily integrated in the design and manufacturing of different blade architectures and can be adapted by adding more cell units.
The impact of implementing this joint system in a blade is less than 10% of the total cost of a monolithic blade. INdeModular was successfully tested in a full-scale mechanical test (static and fatigue loads) to validate the system under the Germanischer Lloyd guidelines (GL assessment 74391 – Jun 2012).
This new concept of segmented blade will also maximize the use of existing manufacturing plants and will facilitate the access to remote areas. On the whole, IINdeModular segmented blade provides a very relevant reduction in transport and logistics cost, more than 10% in comparison with a monolithic blade. Therefore, the delivery of bigger blades to the customer will be cheaper.
