Spain, is the fifth largest worldwide generator of renewable energy patents being solar the technology with more patents (205) followed closely by wind (203). These figures have been published by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office. (OEPM), which describes as spectacular the evolution of the European patents of Spanish origin. In the analysis of the headlines of patents, companies gain the upper hand either in the group of all renewable energies or in the specific area of solar energy; with respect to the latter, companies have registered 131 (64%),private individuals 52 (25%) and public bodies, including universities, 22 (11%).The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) organizes the inventions of the renewable energies sector – including patents and utility models- with reference to the total of Spanish inventions. The results indicate that renewables inventions have gone from 21% in the year 2000 (43 inventions) to 5% in the year 2012 (254 inventions) and the rest lag far behind. The solar energy, with a growth of 771% in the period analysed, reaches the top position in the renewables ranking, with 868 inventions (49% of the total), ahead of the 479 inventions of wind energy (27% of the total) and the rest lag far behind.
